Dual enrollment is an opportunity to enroll in college courses while also earning high school credit. A growing number of students are taking advantage of this opportunity. Students get a preview of college-level rigor that will help prepare them for their first year of college. Courses may be taken at the high school or at Loyola, depending on the high school preference and the format of the course. Additionally, dual enrollment courses cost substantially less for families than a traditional college course.
According to the Louisiana Board of Regent's website:
"Dual Enrollment (DE) courses are college courses where you earn both high school and college credit. But what does that mean?
- Experience Two Schools at Once: Dual enrollment means enrollment in high school and college at the same time!
- Save Time & Money: Complete college-level courses while in high school to increase the chance of graduating college early.
- Potential Certification or Degree: It’s possible to earn certifications in high-demand, high-wage professions before graduating high school. Some students even gain an associate’s degree alongside their high school diploma.
- Experience Campus Life: Attending classes on a college campus means experiencing the unique experience of a campus life, like the extra curricular spaces, green spaces, auditoriums, fitness centers, and the cafeteria.
- Earn Transferable Credits: Many courses are transferable to colleges and universities across the state, saving you time and money.
- Prepare for College: Prepare for college-level learning before enrolling full time in college. Learn the expectations and responsibilities of college coursework, setting you up to succeed later down the road."
Students cannot register for dual enrollment courses independently at Loyola. If you are a student interested in dual enrollment credit, please contact your High School administrator to learn whether your school is a current partner.
Students need to meet eligibility requirements set forth by the state of Louisiana:
For academic courses:
- A minimum 2.5 cumulative high school GPA, as determined by your high school, AND
- Subject-specific demonstration of readiness in Mathematics (for mathematics and science courses) or English (for English, foreign language, history, social science, humanities, or arts survey courses) through either:
- Subject-specific minimum scores on any assessment listed in Academic Affairs Policy 2.22 OR
- Counselor recommendation based on overall student performance and grade trends in the subject
DE students are usually high school juniors or seniors. However, interested students may enroll when the student, the high school, and the college/university all agree that the student is ready and eligible to enroll.

Admission into dual enrollment does not guarantee college admission, but all dual enrollment courses taken at Loyola will count toward Loyola degree requirements.
